Abstract

This paper presents a comparison between safety belt and a device derived from a patented device referred in the paper as alternative device, which is developed for passenger safety. The well reputed ADAMS (Automatic Dynamic Analysis of Mechanical Systems) software package is applied for the simulation of the both systems. Also a study is conducted on integrating both the safety belt and the alternative device in a single system. The centre of focus was placed on comparing the dynamic properties (mainly the accelerations) of the both systems to evaluate their safety levels. Further study has been carried out on human body interaction with the vehicle. The human model used here in the paper is fully developed by the authors. The model used for this purpose is based on anthropometric data obtained from ergonomics handbooks and the dynamic features such as joints and inertia of the body parts were placed accordingly. Furthermore a study on the freedom structure of the human body was accomplished to support the studies.

The simulations in ADAMS were made to display the contrast of safety levels between the safety belt and the alternative device. It was concluded that even though the alternative device did not show impressive results, it reduces the accelerations and the velocities associated with critical parts of the body. Finally it was identified that the integrated use of the alternative device and safety belt, displayed promising results.
